Alpha 2 release to testers!
Hi! Long time no devlog!
Wow, over a month since alpha 1, doesn't feel like that long. Alpha 2.0 is now available to download by testers, there's a whole host of things added and changed in this one so bear with me, this will be a longer devlog!
New level
That's right! The new office building level has been created and assets have been implemented, these assets currently are untextured so yes, they are grey, but don't panic because in alpha 3 textures will be added.
You will also notice that in the main menu there is a second option for playing level 1, it's called "Debug Mode". I haven't seen anyone beat it yet (yes that's a challenge ;D) but it spawns enemies, hostages and items in every position possible, so it's pretty hectic, good luck!
Shoothouse level and new main menu
Along with the new main level, there's another new level, the shoothouse!
The keen-eyed among you may notice that you spawn in the same room shown in the main menu, correct! This is meant to be the HQ that you are operating out of, it features a shooting range and a shoothouse, in the next update it will also feature the tutorial.
Gun improvements
To further test the gun system we have added a shotgun, which is very useful when clearing small rooms quickly and effectively, the reload system for it is currently incorrect, I know! It's going to be changed up in alpha 2.1 don't worry.
We have also got gun models into the game, featuring muzzle flash and sounds! Keep in mind that these sounds may change over development though. Each gun also now has an icon in the inventory menu, it's a nice touch.
Objectives menu
We now have an objectives menu in the game, now you don't need to wander around wondering if you've killed everyone, when you've completed (or failed!) your objectives a new objective will appear asking you to "Exfil", you can leave at the designated exit / exfil point. Although you can leave early too if you want to.
Mission generation system
When loading into a level it will now place enemies, hostages and some items (desk items, magazines, etc) in random spawn points across the map, this has some potential and it will be improved over the coming updates but it adds to the game and makes it a bit more interesting. The same applies to the shoothouse.
Other changes
Some other changes are as follows:
- Bug fixes, we've fixed some annoying bugs from alpha 1.
- Sounds, as well as gun sounds we have hit sounds for surfaces, people and doors.
- Blood, we've added some blood to enemies and hostages, enough said.
- Running, you can run now, hold shift.
- 2 Way doors, some doors can open both ways now, useful.
- Reloading, just tap R now :).
- Door control, just tap E to open a door slightly and hold E to put more force on it.
- New camera shake system, the gun camera shake is a lot cleaner now.
What's Next?
Alpha 2.1
- Rework gun reloading to allow for one by one reloading for guns like a shotgun or revolver, as well as cleaning up the code.
- Instead of holding R to reload magazines, you will be holding R to swap which ammo type you are loading, this will be added to in the future but it's nice to implement the base while I'm working on the reload system.
- Adding a weapon wheel on holding Q, makes sense.
- Adding some coloured lines into the shoothouse to show you where you are going, sorry if you get lost in there currently.
- Reworking player interaction to make it easier.
- Smaller things that il figure out on the way.
Alpha 3
Alpha 3 will be the next major alpha of the project, it will add:
- A tutorial.
- Textures for the levels.
- Kicking open doors.
- Enemy AI and sound response system (more information soon ;) ).
- Crouching behind cover.
- Openable drawers for objects like desks and filing cabinets, maybe we could hide some items in there.
- Item pickups, like door keys and ammo.
- UI redesign.
- Missions with a set amount of retries, the same spawn combination will be able to be played a certain amount of times until you run out of attempts.
- More small things il figure out.
Download Alpha 2.0 now!
If you got to the bottom, thanks for reading, as always any feedback you have is appreciated, drop me a message. Stay tuned for more!
